Teeth Whitening Specialist
The desire to have whiter teeth is the number one aesthetic concern for most patients. Teeth whitening (also known as teeth bleaching) is a simple, effective process to brighten natural tooth enamel from the comfort of home.
Teeth whitening is a common dental procedure:
According to the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry, the most requested cosmetic dental procedure is teeth whitening. Some people have their teeth whitened to correct or avoid dental health problems, and others choose teeth whitening as a cosmetic procedure.
What kinds of discoloration can teeth whitening correct?
Tooth discoloration can have many causes, ranging from genetics to diet, that can be corrected with teeth whitening treatments. Internal tooth discoloration can be caused by exposure to high levels of tetracycline and fluoride, especially during childhood. External tooth discoloration caused by factors such as certain foods - like coffee, tea, and alcohol - and tobacco use. Other factors that contribute to or cause tooth discoloration are:
- Changes in your enamel
- Tooth decay
- Root canal issues
Not all types of discoloration respond well to whitening. Teeth with gray or purple discoloration may not whiten as well as yellow or brown teeth. Teeth whitening works only on natural tooth enamel and will not change the color of crowns or fillings. Alternative procedures, such as porcelain veneers, may be more effective for patients in these situations.
Dr. Mangia vs. At-Home Whitening Kits:
While you can purchase over-the-counter tooth whitening products, dentist-supervised tooth whitening is the safest, most effective, and longest lasting method. Some key reasons you should always consult with your dentist about teeth whitening include:
More Comfortable Solutions
- With our supervised systems, even if you have sensitive teeth, you can undergo teeth whitening treatment with no adverse side effects.
Properly Fitting Mouth Trays
- Over-the-counter tooth whitening trays often do not fit the patient’s mouth properly. A tray that does not fit properly may cause tooth whitening gel to leak. That can result in gum irritation and less effective treatment.
Professional tooth whitening in our office is the preferred whitening method because Dr. Mangia protects your gums and the rest of your mouth properly from whitening agents. Unlike over-the-counter systems, we use a gel that protects your tooth enamel from being damaged.
What does teeth whitening treatment involve?
Tooth whitening typically requires two office visits. During the first visit, molds of the teeth will be made in order to create custom trays for the treatment. At the second visit, patients try on the trays, and any needed adjustments for fit are made.
The actual teeth whitening step takes place at home. Patients apply a special peroxide-based whitening solution to the inside of the tray. Trays are then worn for either 30 minutes twice a day or overnight, depending on the degree of staining and the patient’s goals for whitening. During teeth whitening, it is common to experience tooth sensitivity, but this side effect should disappear once the treatment ends.
How long does it take to see results?
Treatment length varies as to the degree of discoloration, and it usually takes multiple treatments to achieve the desired whiteness; however, teeth are often noticeably brighter after the first treatment.
How long does teeth whitening last?
White teeth can be maintained by regular brushing and flossing and avoid smoking and teeth-staining foods and drinks, such as coffee, red wine, and soda. Touch-ups may be required every few years, depending on the patient's lifestyle.
Dr. Mangia offers a special “Whitening Forever” program to patients who want to keep their smile beautifully white.
